Áhrif opins aðgangs á rannsóknir - The impact of open access on research

.Eitt mikilvægasta hagsmunamál háskóla og rannsakenda við háskóla í dag fjallar um áhrif opins aðgangs á rannsóknir þeirra.

Opinn aðgangur fór af stað sem lýðræðishugmynd til að reyna að stemma stigu við fjárhagslegum ágangi útgefenda í fræða- og vísindatímaritaútgáfu.

Fræði- og vísindatímarit krefjast oftast hárra fjárhæða fyrir birtingu rannsóknaafurða sem verða til í þágu almennings og fyrir tilstuðlan almannafés í formi rannsóknarstyrkja. Með tilkomu opins aðgangs, og þá sérstaklega græns opins aðgangs, var ætlunin að þrýsta á útgefendur að virða höfunda- og birtingarétt rannsakenda.

Grænn opinn aðgangur fjallar um að höfundur rannsóknar geti vistað frumhandrit (preprint) eða lesið handrit (postprint) í rafrænu varðveislusafni háskóla fyrir eða samhliða útgáfu í ritrýndu í fræða- eða vísindatímariti en því miður þekkjast þess nú dæmi hérlendis líkt og erlendis að doktorsnemar hafi ekki fengið birtar greinar úr doktorsritgerðum sínum eftir að hafa vistað samkvæmt grænni leið. Enn ganga útgefendur því of nærri sjálfræði háskóla eins og John Measey bendir á í bloggi um nýlegar rannsóknir á þessari þróun.

Í næstu viku eins og árlega í október hefst OpenAccessWeek eða Vika opins aðgangs en þá verða kynntir og sendir út fimm nýir hlaðvarpsþættir um áhrif opins aðgangs á rannsóknir, blaðagreinar verða birtar, málþing verður haldið við Háskólann á Akureyri og vikunni lýkur svo með tillögu að heimabíói á hinni sífróðlegu heimildamynd Paywall – the movie.

Tökum þátt í Viku opins aðgangs og gætum hagsmuna rannsakenda á háskólastigi!

The impact of open access is one of the most important concerns for universities and their researchers today.

Open access was launched as a democratic idea to work against the financial infiltration of publishers into academic and scientific journal research.

Academic and scientific journals often demand high fees for the publication of research, research that is largely taken on for the benefit of the public and the public funds in the form of research grants. With the advent of open access and especially green open access, the intention was to put pressure on publishers to respect researchers' autonomy with regard to copyright and publication rights.

Green Open Access allows the author of a research manuscript to save a pre-print or a read manuscript (post-print) to their university's electronic archive before or at the same time as publishing it in a peer-reviewed journal.

Unfortunately, there are now examples in Iceland like elsewhere where doctoral students have not been able to publish articles from their doctoral dissertations after self-archiving according to green open access. Publishers in this way continue to threaten the autonomy of universities as John Measey points out in a recent blogpost on current research on this development.

Following the tradition of previous years in October, next week will see the opening of Open Access Week. In Iceland the university libraries have put together a five-episode podcast on the impact of open access on research, newspaper articles will be published, a mini-conference will be held at the University of Akureyri and the week will come to an end with a suggested home cinema on the ever enlightening documentary Paywall - the movie.

Take part in Open Access Week and protect the interests of researchers at the university level!
